the x-mas haul

this year's christmas presents were so amazing! thanks to my mom and dad and both sets of grandparents (and don't forget santa who brought me a dalek!), i'm now the proud owner of a 10th-doctor sonic screwdriver, a talking dalek, cyberman, and tardis, 4 fashion scarves, tootsie rolls, a rainbow loom (omygosh they are the thing among the girls at school) with extra loom bands, hershey bar bodywash, hershey kisses, this really adorable christmas hello kitty stuffy, a purple set of owl-themed hat and fingerless-gloves-that-convert-into-mittens, the biggest chocolate nutcracker i have ever seen, christmas erasers, candy cane tasty things (i have no idea what they are) and some random cool books 'n' stuff.
that was a really long sentence. whew.

twas the night before christmas

ok. tonight is the time where santa claus, this round old man in a red-and-white outfit, will ride in his sleigh pulled by eight reindeer. he will supposedly deliver nice gifts to good children, like pet adipose or ood, and deliver bad presents to bad children, like weeping angels or daleks. however, i'd love a dalek as a pet. hey, santa! i know i'm a 'good' child, but can i please have a dalek for christmas? please?
oh, never mind. it never works.
clatter
maybe that's my dalek! here, dalek!
exterminate!

p. s. merry christmas!

i'm back!

hello everyone! i'm back! did you miss me?
after the six-month break, i've decided to take up blogging again. already i've re-designed the background and text. there's more coming soon, too!
there's a couple things to catch up on.
1. merry christmas!
2. i've gotten the ratties. they are brothers, and their names are ivan (say it the russian way, 'ih-vahn') and sheldon. they are no longer babies, but adults!
3. my new obsession: doctor who. seriously, i'm totally in love with it. tonight i'm keeping my mom up to watch yet another episode on dvd. we watch them after my brother has gone to sleep, so i'm only allowed to watch them on weekend nights. yay for winter break, where i can watch them every. single. night!!!
4. i'm no longer homeschooled. i now go to a wonderful school, walking distance from our house. it's been great for me so far. to see more, check out my mom's blog.
5. i'm so glad to be back in the blogosphere! (that reminds me of that really sad episode of doctor who at the end of the second series with the big sphere. if you watched that one, you'll get the reference. if you didn't watch it now.

ratties!

today's post is about rats.
in 2 months, i'm getting a pair of sister rats. i'm hoping for dumbo - they're so adorable! i will name them shelby and mimi. we've got a cage picked out, and the two months will be so the breeder can breed and wean them.
i can train them to do all sorts of tricks. apparently i can train them to come when i call, hop onto my shoulder or into my pocket when i make a signal, and dance and march.
rats are attratctive, so if you ratify rats, post a comment!

accomplishment

our house is in a planned community, which i've wanted to do for years. a place where my friends are all just down the road = perfection. now, i've gotten my wish and here we are.
i've been going out into our little cul-de-sac (or, since it's really rectangular, a square-de-sac) and playing four-square or catch or four-square volleyball (like four-square, but with two teams). i have made many friends; i've earned a nickname, not to mention a reputation for making the best brownies on the entire planet and probably the universe; and i have nearly gotten past my fear of dogs.
for, now, i'm content.

so cute!!!!!

yo-yo

i am learning how to yo-yo!
at first the yo-yo spun around and didn't even come back up, but with practice, i finally got it.
here's some tips:
1. find a yo-yo with a comfortable grip, a large body, and a long string -  small, cheap ones are awful.
2. get used to winding up the string - most of your practice will be taken up by this.
3. be patient.
this will help just about anyone. once you get it, it's easy!
~ di
p. s. write a comment telling me that you can yo-yo and i'll give you a yo-yo certificate of achievement!

moving

we are moving.
i'm packing boxes, at least five boxes a day. boxes filled with books, papers, toys, blankets, dishes, games, stuffed animals, silverware, bits of junk that i simply can't part with.
we are moving.
our house seems so boring now, without the books and toys. plus we have limited computer time. i don't blog as much.
we are moving to virginia, all the way across the country. we will pack into a minivan, with our fish and rabbit and various pieces of luggage, and drive to the grand canyon. yosemite. hot springs. ancient rune stones.
we are moving.

april fools!

april fools!
it's april fools' day today, and i'm hosting a fun contest.
post in the comments the wackiest, most ridiculous, most well-thought-out pranks you've played today. in return, you'll get a big chunk of chocolate (ha! got ya! april fools!) a blog post on di's lucky button in your honor. (plus, if you put in a link to your blog in your comment, i'll include it in the post!)
the rules: the prank must have been played on someone. the prank must have been played on april fools' day, not on any day. plus, the prank should be funny.
this page has some useful info on april fools' day.
have fun!

bunny!

#1 cutest easter pet:
sweet widdle baby bunny in in a widdle eggshell!
it's so cute i'm melting.
~ di
p. s. no offense at all to our rabbit snowball, who is the bunny.

chocodots

i invented chocodots. chocodots are large gumdrop-shaped chocolates, usually dark, sometimes with swirls of white or milk chocolates. i started making them for valentine's day, for my friends. i melt any kind of chocolate and put it in my special dot-shape silicone-base ice cube tray from target. i freeze the dots, pop them out, and pipe on the melted chocolate topping. i put it in the freezer and voila! chocodots!!
a tasty valentine's treat (or any time treat)!

lucky

official rules for lucky objects are here!
  • all buttons with 2 or 4 holes, and are also round, are lucky.
  • the exception for rule #1 is orange buttons.
  • red buttons with 4 holes are ranked 'most lucky overall.'
  • buttons with brand names are not lucky by themselves, but are lucky when strung together in a button chain.
  • polished stones are lucky.
  • buttons with 1 hole are not lucky.
  • buttons not used in sewing are unlucky.
  • buttons that are not round are extremely unlucky.
  • green, fresh, oval-shaped leaves are lucky.
  • small stuffed key chain objects are lucky, if you can remove the hook they are luckier.
  • if something is labeled 'lucky,' that object is lucky.
  • cute and small pets are lucky - i.e. teacup poodles, teacup bunnies, little chicks, baby mice, baby hamsters & guinea pigs
  • anything with the appearance of luckiness is lucky.
if you have any questions about the luckiness of a particular object, or any questions in general, write a comment please.

boxes

here's a craft that makes a magazine file and is made of ordinary cheerio boxes and fancy wrapping paper - it's that easy, and they're so useful!
you need:
  • sharp scissors
  • fancy wrapping paper that goes with the theme of your room
  • double-sided tape
  • a large cheerio (or joe's o's, the trader joe's brand) cereal box
what to do:
  1. make a mark about halfway up the side of the box.
  2. cut diagonally, starting at the mark and cutting to the other side's top,  so you have one tall narrow side and one short narrow side. now it should look like a magazine file.
  3. using double-sided tape, attach the wrapping paper to the outside and, if you want, inside of the cut box. now it should look pretty.
  4. fill up your box!
credits go to mom.

fish

right now i am in the process of improving my new blog. this includes the fish gadget.
look to the right to see lily the orange fish, lola the green fish, and laurence the red fish. they are hungry sometimes, so you can feed them by left-clicking the mouse inside the tank. when they eat, it makes a ripple. they like your computer mouse, and they follow it everywhere.
for installing this fish gadget, click 'design.' then go to layout. click 'add a gadget' anywhere you want. then click 'more gadgets.' scroll down to 'fish,' click the +,  and design your tank of sweet little fish!

blogonaut

dad's away, and mom and ander (that's my little brother) and i are skyping with him. mom's telling him all about my blog. she asks, "what do you call a person in the blogoshere?" dad responds, "a blogger." hmmmm. that doesn't have the same ring as "astronaut" or "aeronaut."
dad adds, "what about 'blogonaut?'"
taaaa-daaaa!! i'm a blogonaut!
hi to all the other blogonauts blogging on blogger! (try to say that three times fast!)

coding

i'm learning to program computers. i use codecademy, and i have finished the python language course.  i'm currently learning ruby, another language, and i'm a member of 2 groups: homeschooled coders! and codekidz. i'm a co-leader of codekidz, so i have power!!! (muahahahaha)
i really like coding. why don't you hop on to codecademy here, and try your skill in coding?
enjoy!

explanation

i'm happily looking at my new blog. but then i thought, "what a strange title. di's lucky button? i know what it means, but does anybody else know?"
well, i understand it, but this post will explain it to everyone else.
my friend se and i like to have "lucky things" and "unlucky things."
when someone is nervous, we offer them a lucky thing. we always avoid unlucky things. it's fun to do.
one classified lucky object is a button, as in the buttons with 1 hole and 2 holes and 4 holes (in order of luckiness, least to most). because my name is di, and i love lucky buttons (and i want my blog to be lucky), ta-da! di's lucky button!
i hope this explains my blog name.
~ di
p. s. my mom has a pretty unusual blog title, too. see here for the story.
